The Mediterannean Digital Media Observatory (MedDMO) Press Conference co-organized by the Social Computing Research Center (SCRC) of the Cyprus University of Technology and the Cyprus Radio Television Authority (CRTA) was completed with success on the 14th of March 2024.

During the event, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at CUT, Dr. Michael Sirivianos, highlighted the significance of the two-and-a-half-year MedDMO project funded by the European Commission’s “Digital Europe” program. The project aims to establish national digital media observatories, expanding the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) reach.

Furthermore, Neophytos Epaminondas, Director of the Cyprus Radio and Television Authority, stressed the importance of MedDMO in safeguarding democracy and enhancing media literacy. He emphasized combating misinformation in fostering critical thinking and active citizenship. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of MedDMO’s insights into the Authority’s radio and television responsibilities and its role as the National Coordinator for implementing and operating the Digital Services Act (DSA) Regulation.

The MedDMO project coordinator, Dr. Nikos Sarris provided a brief overview of the project objectives and main actions.

Dr. Loukia Taxitari and Thanos Sitistas introduced the anti-disinformation center, Fact-check Cyprus, operating at CUT.

In conclusion, Dr. Theodora Maniou and Mrs. Pantelitsa Leonidou presented the first results of MedDMO activities relevant to monitoring the media landscape in Cyprus, Greece, and Malta.
